I still don't see how cheap junk food is an excuse to not to exercise. People can eat whatever they want (within reasonable limits) if they just exercise it off..
JarJar, how can they provide healthy food, which costs so much more, when schools are having to close down essential programs, like music, arts and sports? A McDonald's cheesburger is only $1, and salads $5 or more? Take for instance this UCSD menu, which lists a pizza (indeterminite size, sorry) as less expensive than a large salad or veggie sandwhich.
My school has 'healthy' food options available, but they don't really boast about it being 'state-of-the-art' like they did with the rest of the school. I have my doubts about it's healthiness anyway. It shouldn't be THAT hard to provide these things. Don't school cafeterias make a profit anyway?
Spoiler
And if they don't...HAHAHAHA!!
'Sides, if they want to be REALLY stingy, they can just buy discounted 'it-tastes-like-crap-why-am-I-eating-it' salad to shut up the government/parents.
Debate. Not comment time. Sorry, but you all are throwing out a lot of ideas with no practical application.
According to the Department of Education, kids who are eligible for free or reduced lunch prices number just under 50 million. This applies to families at 1.8% or below the poverty line, that is, for a family of four, an income of $39,220 a year.
Without doing to much math, it should be obvious that if you're making 39k a year, and splitting it between four family members, you probably don't have the kind of spare time it takes, or resources needed, to make yourself a decent lunch. These children eat free lunch and breakfast out of necessity, not choice.
Now, given that the option of making a healthy lunch is out, and given that school cafeterias obviously don't make a profit if they're giving away around fifty million free meals a day, what do we do?
These children, who have no way to change the situation on their own, will grow up to become drains on the economy as they suffer heart attacks and diabetes, and other serious illness. As frivolous as this debate sounds, it has dire real-life consequences.

When the Socialistic Left got into government in Norway, they wanted free healthy lunches and free fruit to everyone in school.(also free textbooks and a lot of other stuff concerning school)
In the start it sounded idiotic cause not every school even had a kitchen or cafeteria, but now they have buildt out some schools to offer such.
I don't see why Britain and America can't do the same?
Personally when I was a kid going to school I prefered the vended food over the school meals. The quality of food is just horrifying. I'm positive that the homeless shelter was servered with better food.
The main problem is school are no longer funded like they use to be in the 1970s. Im all for banning of unhealthy foods in school but hey you gotta replace it with some good alternatives. Note this is just my perspective in the state of California. Not sure how other states fare.
while we're on the topic of healthy foods...
is pizza consdered a healthy food? to me it is but alot of ppl says it isnt
pizza has all the food groups etc. so i dont see why its unhealthy lol
They already banned all junk food from my school. That means that we have baked (yes baked) potatoe chips, no candy, no drinks high in sugar such as soda, and other soft drinks, no more ice cream, and no more muffins. I'm rather unhappy because really its your choice to pick what you want to eat, and whether you care enough for your body to exercise it off afterwards is your choice as well.

That's because insurance companies in America enjoy the high premium they charge fat fucks & the junk food companies are all against this making a dent in their profits so they pay off politicians to ensure that it never happens.

I would say it depends on how its cooked and how much cheese is on it. Cheese is rather fattening, but with minimal amounts Pizza can be a healthy meal. I know the Weight watchers meals that you can buy in the supermarket here have a line of pizzas. Where I live they have an add campaign currently going telling people to add a few more fruit and veges to the top of your pizza or whatever your eating. Also with pizza I would say one that you made/cooked yourself is probably healthier than the one you buy from the takeout place, but then again I could be wrong...
This is the same with my opinion on hamburgers... Aside from the oil used when cooking the meat patty hamburgers are pretty healthy (well maybe depending on what you put on them... I like mine with cheese, beetroot, lettuce and tomato sauce). You have several of the food groups and fresh veges on them.
Also Serano I personally don't think Ice cream is too bad in moderation especially the ones you'd sell at schools as long as they don't have chocolate etc on them. So maybe something like paddle pops (http://www.paddlepop.com.au/home.aspx) or icy poles which are either pure ice (with flavour) or water and whatever it is. These types have less sugar etc.
I'm not sure about the US but I believe in Australia for a meal fruit and veges tend to be around the same if not less than the meat that goes with it. McDonalds seems to be making the stuff they sell a bit healthier (doing things like changing the oil used to canola oil) too though the other fast food chains seem to be as unhealthy as ever...
But as to healthy meals perhaps the government could somehow subsidise canteens buying fruit and veges so they don't cost more. Part of the problem I guess with fresh fruit and veges is that they tend to go off too quickly. Maybe they could do something with the stuff that can be frozen like peas, corn etc. Nutriciously they apparently aren't too different from when fresh (source here).
Also you can get some healthy breakfast pretty cheap, the prob is cooking time i guess. Something like porridge which is pretty much oats (quick oats is best) and water plus whatever you have with it (I have milk and put a little sugar and wheat germ on top). Because of the oats porridge (nice thick porridge is nice, just add less water/cook for longer) is extremely nutritious (source (here) high in iron, vitamins and minerals, it is also cheap (generic brand is about $AU1.50 i think for about a kilo in the supermarket) however i guess some wouldn't like the taste...
I heard on Super Size me that it cost exacly the same to buy/prepare healthy food then it is to make a nasty gressy pigs ass (wich i would glady eat). I mean if you had nothing to eat and you get to school, see a delicious chicken burger waiting to be consumed then of coarse your going to eat it, just as easy as you were to eat a double whooper. O well, in HS, wher your choises actualy matter, i cant point out one child that cant make something healthy out of the food our school gives us.
A quick ex.
I would get: Carrots, Grapes, Chicken sandwich, Frys, Milk
Now wtf is wrong with that? If you warching your carbs dont eat the bread on the sandwich, dont eat your frys. I dont know, im losing hope in humanity. When the kids start to blame others then you know this generation is about to be FUCKED up.
I think the people are blaming it too much on the schools and stuff then on the kids. I mean, you have a choice you know, I rarely eat anything at school anyways, it's not that hard really, just eat breakfast and some lunch when you get home (alot cheaper than a kantine anyways) and you'll be fine. So I think they should blame the schools a little bit less and blame the people themselves for eating it. Just my thought about it. ^^
Well, the thoughts are that, one, the schools often aren't able to provide the healthy alternative, and two, that it's not so much the kids (to a certain age) but the parents that should be held responsible for what their children eat.
