Default US embargo on Cuba - 03-31-2008, 06:31 PM

The US currently has a complete trade embargo on Cuba, a remnant of the cold war meant to punish them for being communist. Many argue that this policy is outdated and unfairly harms the Cuban people. Others argue that the Cuban economy is decent and relatively self sufficient when compared to the tourism and fruit economies of Jamaica, the Bahamas, and other Caribbean nations.

What do you think?

I guess I agree that it is a bit outdated, but don't think for a second that we're not still scared of communism.

I bet you if I told someone in the government that I was communist, I'd get shunned.

i think its outdated.

makes me wonder why the US has trade with china in large scale and an embargo on cuba.

because they can afford an embargo on cuba?

This is what i respected about Castro...he made sure everyone was equal. Rich or poor everyone got the same treatment, whether it is education, health care or whatever.

I feel it's unnecessary for the US to be still acting so "shady" toward Cuba. But i really don't think it's harming them, i think their economy is decent, but it will be better if the US does in fact lit this outdated embargo on Cuba.

I would rather see Cuba get equal treatment in trading to the US and visa versa. Why have an embargo on them when China is also a communist nation?

Cuba took sort of an active role during the cold war, unlike China. Though saying it's because the US can afford to have a trade embargo on Cuba and not China it's very accurate. After all, everything is made in China.

Not everything is as extreme as it seems though. I know plenty of people from Cuba that have come to my country as part of our president's efforts to promote socialism, and according to them they can get american cars (directly from the US) and some industrial supplies purchased by the Cuban goverment. They are mostly used in public transportation.

A few expansion projects are taking place as we speak in the petrochemical area, relying on american and canadian technology among others european licenses.

I don't think the average cuban cares too much about this embargo, as they have gotten used to it by building an economy around it, but there doesn't seem to be any reason to keep it going any longer.

The embargo is definantly (sp) outdated. I was just thinking about this the other day. This isn't a pressing concern, and Cuba can live with it just as much as we can, but considering the reason why it was put in place, there is no real good reason for it to remain to this day.
