Just a thread about the new music that is going around. I personally don't like new music. These people rhyme and curse a few times, and they're automatically rich. Let's look at "Soulja Boi". First of all, the spelling. They remind me of an 11 year old on the internet. Do you think the song would have been popular if they spelled it like a human being? No. That's what fascinates(sp) people these days. Secondly, the meaning. What exactly DOES it mean? "Watch me crank dat soulja boy". It doesn't even make sense. Finally, how it was made. I see no musical instruments. They probably turned on a drum machine and started singing. It takes zero talent to set the beats per minute. Also, most of the song they have someone yelling "YOUUUU" Do you think you will ever see another song by "Soulja Boi Tellem?" No! He's rich now, he's set for life.
Now, let's take a look at another song. "Party like a Rockstar". They wouldn't know the meaning of rockstar if it bit them in the behind. They repeat "Party like a rock--party like a rockstar." for over half of the song.
Now, a classic song. "It's a long Way to the Top if you Wanna Rock N Roll" by AC/DC. This is true rock. They don't have to curse. The song makes sense. It tells what true rock is. And look how many instruments were used. Guitar, rhythm guitar, drums, and even bagpipes. Now do you think you can find a current song like this? I think not.

I agree with you, most(if not all) rap songs curse and have 1 or no melodies. They don't have any musical talent. Heavy metal is nothing but screaming and yet tons of people love it. If they knew the point behind the songs(if there is one), maybe most of those fans would leave
Just for the record, Heavy Metal isnt screaming, you're thinking of Black Metal and Death Metal.
Edit: Ohhh wait you're right. This new "metal" is just mindless screaming and growling

There are good bands out there still, you just have to look past the surface and dig a bit into some of the underground stuff. There are still bands that have meaningful lyrics, good instrumentals, and even unusual instruments or configurations. Sadly hip-hop has more or less died as an artform, the rap of the 80's shall be missed.

There are some good bands with well written lyrics that actually know what an instrument looks like. You just have to look around for them.
Tori Amos-Lovely singer and piano player.
Nightwish-Heavy Opera type rock. They use lots of different instruments in their music.
From violins, pianos, keyboards, flutes, guitars, drums. Tarjun(can't spell her name) the lead singer, well was lead singer. She sung opera type style, she had a very beautiful voice.
There's many more out there. I don't like rap at all or those bands that think screaming is singing.

Thank you! These "metal" bands think that if they growl the word "Satan" and scream their lungs out they're metal. Bull. Ozzy is metal. Iron Maiden is metal. You don't see them screaming. Heck, Ozzy has written slow songs like Dreamer and Mama Im Coming Home and he's STILL metal!
Screaming aside, playing music like metal is challenging, and requires talent no matter what you'd like to believe. I'd like to see anyone of you play as fast, as hard, or as long as any one of them do. Besides, your just looking at shitty metal. A lot of it has ACTUAL singing. EX: Mudvayne, Stone Sour.
Simply because you don't like it, doesn't mean its not music. Sure it might have been simple to create, but all those jingles in old games, like Mario for example, were simple to create yet I'm damn sure you'd call that the games music.
I'm not saying its not music. I'm just saying they think if they can scream, they're metal. Hell, i could do that. And i know that metal is hard to play. I want to cry when i play the opening riff of Crazy Train.
There is ALWAYS good new music out there. It's exciting, and so much fun finding it as well. I'd say about 5% of it is mainstream, the rest you'll hear on College/University radio stations. Alternative music stores and live venues, etc...
New music has been ALOT better in the past 4-5 years than it has in a long time.
Just because someone likes a type of music doesn't mean that it isn't music. I agree, rap/r&b sucks now, but it used to be good. And all that screaming, well, alot of them are screaming nonsense or just want to be cool. Some of if it is good though, and has really good lyrics.
I like current rap & r&b. I like the soulja boy song. I like the party like a rockstar song. I don't know how many times I'm going to have to say it, but I'll keep saying it; You don't like the music? Whoopdeedoo, get over it. Just because you don't approve of it doesn't mean it's not music. Just because you can't see where the talent comes into play doesn't mean there's none involved. Do I like most of the crappy rock you guys listen to? Nope, it all sucks in my opinion. Does that mean it's not music? Nope, it just means I personally don't like it.
FYI, no artist gets rich off one smash hit, unless they're some independent musician with unheard of success.. Soulja Boy probably got little to nothing from that song. His production company has profitted nicely, but he is very far from being set for life.
Bottom line, people a generation older than us (or the generation before that if you're listening to the music of the generation before us) said the same exact thing about your music. People of our generation will say the same exact thing about the next generation of music. I think we should all just shut up, stop complaining about music, realize people have different tastes, and move on.
Off-topic:demi, you ALWAYS have to disagree with me, dont you :P.
Yea, old school rap was great. stuff like older Eminem and NWA. Not this new stuff. the songs that these 13 year olds walk around rapping is what i don't like.
And on the topic of screaming, I like the screaming before 2000. now its just generic. Children of Bodom is some good screaming. not these guys who tune their guitars 12 steps down and slam the strings.
I never said that. I'm saying how it's getting very old. I can see hip-hop dying out around '09. classics are going to make a comeback. emo is dying too.

Quoted for truth. Although my musical tastes are completely different to yours (I don't like rap nor R&B, and I love rock- specially classic and progressive). At the end, it comes to respect other people's musical tastes.
Basically, you might hate xxxxxx musical genre, but someone else loves it. You might think xxxxx isn't "music", but someone else might think it's the greatest thing ever. Just respect other people's musical tastes.
