Default Ranger - PvP Techniques? - 02-21-2008, 10:02 AM
REGISTER TO REMOVE THIS AD

I'm a level 72 Ranger and I really, really suck at PvP and Arena.

It's probably common for a Ranger to not do very well in PvP, but I've heard a few successful Rangers who do better than a lot of classes.

Anyone have techniques for me to use in Arena? The Ranger skills cast really slow, and I heard somewhere that you are suppose to use Acro skills...But...*shrug*

lol...

You should do fairly good from 60-80ish I think, even to 90ish about. How do you start the duel? Like what do you do during a duel?

oh and it may be possible for you to beat low sta bp's and blades. bps only if you're lucky really. in fact it may not be as possible as it was before since there's no more knock backs. it used to be possible to kill a bp and get lucky enough or calculate enough to attack them in just the right away that prevention didn't go off (this varied from bp to bp though). also if you fight a bj most can be killed with flame arrow. i guess the same would go for a yoyo jester but i think they tend to have more sta so it might take a bit more and you may not have enough sta to survive if they have HoP.

Either use Ice/Fire or spam Junk arrow.
Or, get to 75 and max silent arrow. Trust me when I say that for mages, silence is worse than sneaker.

Arena wise, I wouldn't suggest going until you're at least level 80-90. Rangers already have a tough time keeping it together, you'll need to be at least in that range to put up a decent fight. Keep in mind, if you're the full dex build, you'll get murdered.

Silence is you're most valuable technique at the moment, and fast shot could come in handy. With silence, you have an extreme upper hand against Elementors, Psykeepers, Asal Billposters, and AoE Ringmasters. There's not much you can do against blades, knights, and jesters except shoot them as fast as you can.

I've taken notice that the majority of Asal-crazy billposters in the arena so far have been in the level 80 range, so if you're at least 90 with a nice bit of stamina (perhaps around 50-70) you can generally kill them first. Some BPs run away the moment you silence them, it really depends on the person. Psys and Eles are pretty much rendered helpless. They might run up and slap you with their stick but chances are, with your dex, it'll miss, or be blocked. Ringmasters are another story.

Sometimes it's considered unsportmanlike to kill ringmasters in the arena. In my opinion, they shouldn't be inside the arena in the first place, but I have been attacked by a few ringmasters who have Merkaba. They tend to hit me with HC, then slap a Merkaba out. In moments like this, Fast Walker is your best friend. If you can cast it and get out of range fast enough, you can probably silence the ringmaster after they Hc you, but before they can cast Merkaba.

It's all about practice. Rangers can be good at PvP, but it takes a lot of work, and it's hard to PvP when half the arena is full of Lv 80+ people. Don't hesitate the enter the arena early, though. I think it would be good to mess around and find out how much of a fight you can put up against some other players!

Most blades get pwned before 90. Since most blades don't really have stam. Actually a lot of classes don't put in as much stam as they should to PVP in the early levels. Every class should be killable in your level range of 72.

DI, and Fire Arrow like destrus said, works nicely. Auto shot is a good skill to use or Junk Arrow. The other ranger skills are worthless besides Triple Shot, Silent Shot, and Fast Shot.

Triple shot is a good skill that should be used right out of DI. It confuses a lot of people that get hit by it especially when they are searching for you and suddenly they get pushed back. Gives you a few more seconds to launch another attack. But you get that 80.

By PvP I meant Arena, or Gw. I hate 1v1 PvP...

I guess you can only be good once you get to level 80-90..
Oh well, that means its time to level.

thanks for all your help. I would Rep you all but they got rid of the Rep system o.o

First, make sure you are lv75+ and have the full dex AoE build, cause else way it`s pretty hard since your STA points doesn`t really help you to PvP.

PvP tactic:
DI while the "3, 2, 1" is running, use Silent Arrow and then start using original arrows or Junk Arrow or your AoE skills)

PK arena tactic:
DI before you enter, pick a target, use some AoE skills, run to the side of the arena with fast walker, DI, use AoE skills and so on.

Well, i used to fight a lot in DM's on my ranger.

One tactic i used was DI and run to the middle, use fastwalker and then run like hell and see if collect a crowd off bloodlust enemy's.
A bit off varation on this is is with blades around, use ice and then fastwalker, they will try to hit you, but since you have high blockrate, you will be safe.
It was actually rather effective, i had quite a few following me.

I also used poison arrow a lot in PVP. It was nice, but it makes your DI a bit more worthless with the added DoT.
You can still use it with guildies in the area fighting even if the enemy has DoT poison on them. Use DI and they tend to focus on someone else, so you can still kill them, only with a bit off help this time.

And if 80-90 is the best time for a ranger to fight, it makes me even more sad.
Basically, it's easy to survive, but damagewise it just sucks.

So basically the only way a Ranger could ever do well in Arena and in GW is if he/she hit and runs?

o.o

That makes me really sad.

It depends on your level Exin. Rangers slow down a lot while other classes speed up as you get higher (105+)

Like at your level, you should be able to do good damage and killl a bunch of people like any other class, when fighting people around your level.

For a ranger to even compete at the higher levels, you have to spend a ton of money. Even then though, really really hard to do massive damages.

I had a +8 set/+12%attack with Hbow+9.
And still, it was extremely hard for me to kill.
Surviving was easy, i had good block/evasion rate and enough HP.

I only used that technique, cause the higher you get, the more help you need with killing basically. So in order for me to do stuff on my own, i could only use DI + FW.
In that way, i would still help my guild and actually take pride i did something on my own. Nothing is more annoying, then seeing you have trouble killing everyone, even FS RM's 105+.

You can kill fine if you fight on lower levels yeah. Roughly, it will take 3/4 Hp from them away if they are low HP chars if you would use firearrow.

my suggestion is to use Silent arrows on Ele, psy, and bp. Since I'm a Ranger myself at Mushpoie, here's my experience...

Depends on how I want it, normally I don't start hitting someone unless they start to get me. In that case, I get in to the arena and stay there for a bit and see who would want to target me. Most cases, Psy and BP are usually the ones targetting me so I let them have the first kill. Afterward, I get buffed up, use DI, get into position on the target, wait till DI is almost down to the last second, summon my silent arrow, then spam JA. If by chance you know you can't kill them, remember, by the time Silent Arrow effect is about to worn out, you will have a decision to make.... either continue on and hope you kill him/her, or bail out. To bail out use DI again, remember in the beginning I mention wait till your DI is down to the last second then start using your other skill... that's because you need time for the cool down. That being said, while you start silencing the psy, ele, or bp, and spamming junk arrows, your DI should be ready to use as a contingency.

For Blade, depending on your build... Dex build gives you high block rate, in which I believe is a necessity for all Rangers. If going towards a blade, I rely on my block rate and spam JA. But it's a rare case that I get targeted by a blade.

Junk Arrow is one of the common usage for most Ranger, as for your lvl, I would use it until you get high enough like me. I always use Triple Shot whenever I go pvp to subsitute JA. From my current experience, I end my fight with just one Triple Shot and that's the end of it. But of course there are times TS did not kill my opponent, so I just use my regular arrows to finish him/her off.

================================================== ====

So far I've been able to pvp and win over a lot of players out there. Most of the time they tend to find out that killing me isn't that easy and they really need to work for it so instead they rather leave me alone or just be friends in game.

Because of my lvl now and how I play the game, I normally don't get a lot of people targetting me, that's because I don't like to start trouble from whiners out there. In fact people come and ask if they can challenge me to pvp instead... so all in all, I gain my respect from others, but doesn't mean we're not going to pvp less, just that they know we can make the game fun and avoid getting harrassed.

Hopefully, this is informative for you and good luck.
