The first step of creating a video about anything you like, is of-course the recording. You want the footage to at least be more than average in quality, have a descent framerate or be able to record at very high framerates for slow-motion.
Here is a list of popular and widely known video recording programs. Some of them are trials, which means you might need to purchase the full version of the software to use some of the locked functions.
Note:Recording video at higher framerate or at very high quality might require a high-end system.
  • Fraps
I could say it is one of the most popular recording software out there. But not the best choice for low-end systems. Includes all your basic functions (Framerate, audio options).
  • CamStudio
Mostly known for it's ability to record simple screencasts. But if configured right, can record high quality gameplay.
Note: Configuring might require higher knowledge of video recording.I don't suggest it unless you know what you are doing.
  • Xfire
Xfire, itself being a program for in-game chat and for tracking game info, has a built in video recorder which you can activate at any time if the game is running with Xfire enabled. Personally it didn't work very well for me, but give it a try.
  • Hypercam
Rather popular piece of software, known to be used by amateurs.
  • Wegame
It's a free Fraps alternative to record gameplay and share the video online.
  • ScreeToaster
A Web-based screen recorder. I often use it to record som desktop mini game.
  • BB Flashback Express
A free screen recorder which supports webcam recording.
  • DemoCreator
A screen recorder that allows you to edit your video with built-in video/audio editor.
If you have a problem with video formats, you should try this converter:
  • Format Factory
A free super multifunctional media converter. It offers All to XXX video format converting and mostly I use it to turn my video into .MP4 for YouTube sharing.
If you know of a good recorder I should mention, please PM or comment

Default My own experience

I'd like to add more solutions.

Game recording

1. Wegame
It's a free Fraps alternative to record gameplay and share the video online.
2. ScreeToaster
A Web-based screen recorder. I often use it to record som desktop mini game.
3. BB Flashback Express
A free screen recorder which supports webcam recording.
4. DemoCreator
A screen recorder allows you to edit your video with built-in video/audio editor.

Audio recording

Audacity
Surely it's the best sound recording tool, and it's free. You can record many soundtracks at the sametime and sync the video and audio at ease.

Video format converting

Format Factory
A free super multifunctional media converter. It offers All to XXX video format converting and mostly I use it to turn my video into .MP4 for YouTube sharing.

Video Editing

Windows Movie Maker
I think it's enough to help you to create an impressive game video with it. I like its movie op and end authoring features.
