Default Effects of smoking once a month and "not breathing it in" - 05-01-2009, 09:25 AM
I've been Googling around, but I can't seem to find a really scientific answer to this.. What are the long term health implications of someone who smokes "once a month," and for someone who "doesn't breathe it in"? Can it still get into the lungs (not taking into account second hand smoke from people around you), and will you still get nicotine in your body (Can you still get addicted, or feel the "effects" that come with smoking)?

I'm assuming, that once a month cigarette will for sure affect the mouth and throat? .. I don't know much about smoking, so any input would be appreciated D:

[Serious responses, please.. and no.. I'm not asking because I'm considering it.]

Thanks for your help :3

I dont think you'll get addicted since even smokers admit the taste is pretty awful. It's the nicotine entering the body, so if you just blow it out it shouldn't affect you (just like storing alcohol in your mouth and spitting it out doesnt get you drunk)

Even if you did inhale, once a month probably isn't enough to have any effect. Smoking doesn't have a real "feeling" right there and then like drugs do, at least I didn't notice anything the few times that I smoked. Many people say it relieves stress.

As a long time smoker, I can say the only time I get anything resembling a 'buzz' effect is if I go several days without a cigarette and then smoke one. I've found typically that the stress I am relieving by smoking is the stress caused by my body wanting more and more of that sexy nicotine in it.

And Mei - what you are describing is basically like smoking a cigar once a month. Long term I'd say the worst you'd encounter would be maybe a little staining on your teeth. I suppose it would be possible to get mouth cancer from it, but you'd have to ask someone with more medical training than I have,

On the addictive part, smoked loads (Mainly when im drunk) and never got addicted. Health problems I would say like Hazel its the same as smoking cigars as the norm is not to inhale the smoke as such, but more likely the effects taking alot longer to set in.

In terms of getting a proper set in stone answer, I wouldn't think even a specialist would be able to answer you 100%. Only give you a possibility of things based on what happens to people who smoke (As most studies are based on a daily approach to smoking). But it would be based on the fact its done over a long period of time.

I wouldn't say it would, I used to smoke on a day to day basis, or every other day at that, most of 8th grade until summer after Sophomore year. I haven't noticed any long term problems nor have I been checked for any related problems, I have passed a few physicals though.

And breathing it in can have some cause on you, I remember reading something about Mexico city air is like smoking two packs a day.

But unless you have asthma, 2nd hand smoke shouldn't really effect you, only if you breathe in heavy does of it at the time.

Nothing at all will happen. It won't affect your lungs, you won't get addicted.

Also, once a month? Even if you inhale the smoke from a cigarette once a month you won't get addicted. You also don't get addicted on the first cigarette. Smoking about 5 cigs a day (for a few days - few weeks) WILL get you addicted.

what hazel said.

Also, cigarettes have been said (by doctors) to be more harmful to you body than marijuana. So smoking 1 cig a month versus 1 joint are totally different to your body and surprisingly the one that is illegal will do far less damage to you (and may even help you in some things) The main hazards in cigarettes dont come from the actual tobacco but from the products that are added into the filters.

It is said that in regards to mouth cancer and etc that to "not inhale" is actually raising your chances of mouth cancer versus inhaling it will do more damage to your lungs than your mouth. When you dont inhale the smoke is in your mouth stagnating for much longer which will stain your teeth more. (thats why old men that smoke the once a month cigar tend to have yellower teeth than a chain smoking cigarette smoker)

As a casual smoker I don't know much but I can tell you that smoking around once a month will not do very much to your health. Not breating it in will probably not do anything at all. You won't get a buzz and the your lungs and throat will not be affected, maybe your mouth.
