Er, yeah they do it to entertain the crowd. Good skills in game = better crowd entertainment. Not just soccer, but any professional sport really.

German fans want revenge grilling of oracle octopus

Reuters
Berlin

Some Germans are calling for a public roasting of the oracle octopus who correctly picked the winner of all six of their national soccer team's World Cup matches - including a bitter defeat to Spain on Wednesday.
Paul, a two-year-old octopus in a German aquarium, turned into a global celebrity for his uncanny ability to predict the winner of all Germany's matches - even a group stage defeat to Serbia and an ousting by Spain in the semi-finals.
"Nothing beats grilled octopus," said Dolores Lusch, a Germany fan who works on a Berlin fish stall. "Cut him up in thin slices and grill him on all sides with a dash of lemon juice, olive oil and garlic on it. Delicious!"
Not an ordinarily superstitious people, Germans became believers in Paul's possible psychic powers. The country was shocked and distraught when he picked Spain to win after tipping German wins over Argentina, England, Ghana and Australia.
German newspapers and websites were filled with suggestions of what to do with Paul - most involved cooking and eating him.
"Throw him in the frying pan," wrote the Berliner Kurier newspaper in a popular sentiment echoed by Die Welt, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the Hamburger Abendblatt and other newspapers.
Paul's picks have become news across Germany and around the world. German networks have had live reports on Paul's picks.
On Friday, Paul will tip the winner of Saturday's Germany-Uruguay match for third place as well as the winner of the Spain-Netherlands final on Sunday. Networks in Germany, Spain and the Netherlands are planning live coverage.
The octopus, considered by some to be the most intelligent of all invertebrates, gets the choice of picking food from two different transparent containers lowered into his tank - one with a German flag on it and one with the opponent's flag.
The container Paul opens first is regarded as his pick.
Media attention over Paul's picks in Germany and abroad has grown exponentially and some commentators even wondered aloud whether his improbable winning streak might have begun to influence some of the more superstitious players.
Despite the antipathy towards Paul, Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig said Paul has a bright future at his home in Oberhausen.
"Nothing bad will happen to Paul," she said. "No one wishes him ill-will. Paul has had a great run."
Munzig added that Paul's career might go on.
"We've had some enquiries about his future," she said.

Spain worried about safety of new world star Paul the Octopus

DPA
Oberhausen, Germany

Paul the Octopus has turned into a global superstar revolving around the 2010 World Cup, with top political leaders in Spain even worried about the oracle mussel-eater's safety.
Football players, fans and politicians turned into believers of the Paul phenomenon after the psychic octopus correctly picked the winner of yet another World Cup match involving the German national team.
From his tank at Aquarium Sea Life in Oberhausen, Germany, the formerly England-based Paul predicted Spain would beat Germany in the semi-finals after having chosen Germany wins over Australia, Ghana, England and Argentina and a loss against Serbia.
"This Paul is a miracle," said Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso after the team's semi-final win.
Paul has become a star around the world, appearing on Australian television, CNN, BBC, the Washington Post, the New York Times and dozens of sports papers. The German news channel ntv even carried Paul's selection between Germany and Spain live with two reporters doing commentary.
The Twitter account "Pulpo Paul" is one of the most-searched in the charts. And there are a number of fan pages on Facebook - mostly from Spain.
Now fans from Spain and the Netherlands are both anxiously awaiting Paul's prediction for the final.
His handlers however will first on Friday morning at 11 am (0900 GMT) have Paul pick Germany's encounter with Uruguay in the third place game.
Two glass cubes are baited with mussels and marked with flags of Germany and Uruguay. The mussel Paul chooses first is viewed by his handlers as his prediction.
While Spanish football supporters are in heaven about La Roja reaching their first World Cup final, politicians are worried about irate - if not idiotic - German fans who blame Paul for their team's 1-0 loss against Spain in the World Cup semis.
"That crazy octopus was right. Calamares for everyone," yelled a customer at a Greek restaurant in Frankfurt.
Even before the match, the German Westfaelische Rundschau paper had Paul on the front page on Wednesday after his semi-final prediction, accompanied by a one-word verdict: "Traitor."
No wonder Spain Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is fearful of Paul's health.
"We will send Paul a team of bodyguards," he said after Spain's win over Germany.
And Environment Minister Elena Espinosa would like to file for endangered species status so that Germans do not eat Paul.
followers in the Netherlands are also anxious of Paul's prediction. The mass daily De Telegraaf said there is only one question mark remaining, writing: "Octopus promise: Oranje Champion?"
The paper's online edition came up with an urgent Internet news item including a picture in which Paul had tipped the Netherlands. The so-called "photo evidence" showed Paul opening the case with the red-white-blue flag.
The daily later said it was a fake and added: "We cannot get too happy too early."

That's about as true as it is in competitive shooters; it's not true at all. At the end of the day, people pay to see a professionally played game of football, where the team they are supporting give it their all. This is what both sides seemed to do (I watched the last half of the match) and yet you're complaining. The fact of the matter is that you wouldn't even complain if Germany had seized a goal 20 minutes from the end of the game, because it would have been your team winning. It really surprises me how logic completely escapes football discussions where victories or defeats are concerned.

From what I saw, regardless of who I was supporting, Spain played a good game of football and created plenty of opportunities. They had a solid defence, which stopped Germany making many goal opportunities. The thing is, whenever a German player had the ball within reach of the goal, there were 2+ Spaniards marking him and blocking his shots. I can count at least 3-4 times in the last 20 minutes where it was one Spanish player against 1 German defender and the keeper, keeping the pressure constant.

I just find it odd that you can't flat out confess that you lost and it's all fair and everything is in order... you just have to blame something else. I've been in Holland for the past few days and I've had several people (in fact, I think everyone I've met on a personal level) not only talk about how shit England played, but how Holland are "going to win the world cup" in a very "as a matter of fact" manner. And do you know what? They're right, we did play shit. With the exception of things like "offsides that really weren't" and "goals that shouldn't have been disallowed", the proof is in the results who is the better team during that match.

Just face the facts, Germany got beat fair and square and you're having a hard time admitting it so you have to pick apart the way Spain plays which, whilst you might not find it entertaining to watch, is not only a valid tactic, but one that works and applies plenty of pressure to the opposition over the small remaining time in the match. After all, isn't the aim of a football match to win, or am I missing the point?

Oh, and don't mind me, I'm just sat here with my coolface on because idgaf who wins any more. Spain is who I'd prefer to win and I'll be forced to watch the finals because of how religiously Eline's family follows the football, but the actual victor is inconsequential. If Holland win, there'll be celebrations (which means everyone is happy). If Holland lose, there'll be no fucking vuvuzelas and chanting and fireworks. England played shit and I've accepted that fact and never expected them to take home the cup, so whoever takes it probably deserves it if there's no bullshit from the ref.
Dude, honestly, WHO THE FUCK IS ELINE??????????

In other news, if I hear about that fucking octopus one more time... It's not that I wanted Germany to win or anything (in fact, I wanted URUGUAY to win the WC) but I hate people who don't give a fuck about the sport being all "LOLOL you knew about that octopus?" like if that was relevant in any way.

I dont see whats wrong with longys posts, he clearly admitted germanys lost, in-fact he doesnt like spains play it should be fine for everyone as we dont like the same things.

All hail the octopusy, muslims and christians should be praying to this new god , but ofc before anything we gotta kill him, like we did with jesus christ, to become a saint, then sometime later we will creat this new religion called Octuposian.
