I believe they use the "Alt Command Macros" for the special characters.
Under ur Start menu on your desktop *NOT IN-GAME*
Go to "All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map/"

In that program if u select the special character u want and in the bottom right hand corner it will show the alt command.

Example
Lets say u want a "¥" <--- The Symbol for Yen
what u do is hold the "Alt Key" on your keyboard and then press on the Numberpad "0165"
then the "¥" will show up.

Choos a basic font tho. Fonts with images like Wingdings etc... won't show up in alt commands.
